It uses mimcry to look like the distasteful Pipevine caterpillar. This species is P.troilus ilioneus which uses Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) as its host plant. They also can use sassafras (Sassafras albidum, Sweet bay (Magnolia glauca) and Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum), tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipfera), sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana), camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) and redbay (Persea borbonia). These are only available for Florida customers. Please remember to have Spicebush or other of their host plants for these caterpillars when they arrive.
